We are NYC-DSA

Democratic socialism is the belief that society should be democratic, and that the interests of the many should prevail over the interests of the wealthy few. In our vision, every New Yorker has a voice and what they need to survive.

In the United States, we're told that we live in a democracy, but that isn't true: Our workplaces are managed by bosses, who determine how we work and how much we make, even if it's not enough to make ends meet. Our landlords raise our rents unjustifiably. And in our elections, money buys power, regardless of what everyday people think.

All of this is capitalism, the system we currently live in, where the ruling class exploits the rest of us for their own profit. Democratic socialism is the antidote: In our vision, ordinary people, not just the rich, can shape society. We can have a real voice in our workplaces and neighborhoods.

There are many ways to achieve democratic socialism, and NYC-DSA is showing what's possible to cities across the country. We're electing proud democratic socialists to office — in our City Council, in the state legislature, and even in the mayor's office. (Yes, Zohran Mamdani is a democratic socialist — he's a DSA member!) We're organizing our workplaces and, alongside our coworkers, we're making demands for better pay, more sick time, and more humane working conditions. We're fighting to take our energy sources away from corporations like National Grid and ConEdison, and put them where they belong: in the hands of the people. And we're talking to our neighbors, building tenants unions and establishing support for divestment from the U.S. military machine, so that our money funds what all of us benefit from — things like Medicare for All, high-quality public schools, and childcare.
