NYC-DSA Candidate Zohran Mamdani Wins New York City Mayor Democratic Party Nomination on Democratic Socialist Platform
NEW YORK, NY – NYC-DSA candidate and Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani defies all expectations to claim the Democratic Party nomination for mayor through an explicitly socialist platform.
“New York, we have renewed our democracy,” Mamdani stated during last nights victory speech. “We have given our city permission to believe again. And I pledge to you that we will remake this great city not in my image, but in the image of every New Yorker who has known only struggle. In our New York the power belongs to the people.”
Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani united a historic coalition by running on a socialist platform, addressing the root causes of the affordability crisis that everyday New Yorkers face.
“NYC-DSA is proud to have played an integral part in Mamdani’s campaign.” NYC-DSA Co-Chair Grace Mausser said. “Our 8,800+ members volunteered as field leads, organized phonebanks, and helped spread Mamdani’s socialist vision across all five boroughs.
This is just the beginning. The billionaires who have funded Donald Trump, Andrew Cuomo, and Eric Adams are enemies of democracy and have made clear their intentions to spend unprecedented dark money to silence the voices of working New Yorkers. The road to Gracie Mansion will be hard, but our members and the over 50,000 volunteers behind Zohran’s campaign are ready to face whatever mega billionaire donor dares to interfere with the democratic process on behalf of the corrupt and failing political establishment.
Zohran Mamadani’s campaign is like nothing we’ve seen before, turning out over 50,000 volunteers who have knocked on over 1.6 million doors throughout the entire city. New Yorkers turned out in record breaking numbers for Zohran because he’s running a campaign to build what New Yorkers need: a city we can afford.
“That new day—the one that we have yearned for, the one that we have struggled for, the one that we have knocked for, have texted for, have called for. The one that we have obsessed over. That new day is finally here,” the Mayoral nominee said.
This historic victory of working people over the oligarchs extends throughout the city and into the City Council. Councilmember Alexa Avilés, a longtime community organizer and democratic socialist, ran and won without taking a single cent of corporate PAC money. Her campaign was powered by thousands of volunteers who knocked on doors, phonebanked, and mobilized neighbors across Sunset Park and Red Hook.
We are in a new political era. We have proven every establishment Democratic Party leader wrong: only well-organized people inspired by a socialist vision of the future can beat Trump’s fascism. The age of corporate domination is coming to an end, thanks to committed democratic socialists fighting for the society we deserve.
