NYC-DSA Responds to Reported Senate and Assembly One-House Budgets
NYC-DSA is going to fight tooth and nail to ensure the legislature and Governor Hochul listen to their constituents: New Yorkers demand a budget that delivers the state we deserve, funded by taxes on the rich.
Every cent of new revenue in the one-house budget proposals exists because of the pressure of our movement, and because New Yorkers have shown at the ballot box and in polls that they overwhelmingly support taxing the rich.
The statewide measures included are a sign our calls broke through—but they aren’t enough to stand up to Trump’s devastating cuts and fail to meet the full scale of the affordability crisis.
The new city-level taxes on wealthy corporations are thanks to legislation introduced only a few weeks ago by DSA legislators, State Senator Kristen Gonzalez and Assembly Member Diana Moreno, and are an important step towards filling NYC’s budget gap.
Governor Hochul would do well to remember it’s not just ‘three people in a room.’ It’s her versus the millions of New Yorkers outside who deserve better.
