TODAY: Zohran Mamdani, Jabari Brisport, Kristen Gonzalez, and Alexa Avilés Join Rally to Protect Trans Kids
Trans Day of Visibility Rally to Protect Trans Kids
WHAT: The Trans Day of Visibility Rally will fight back against anti-trans actions taken here in New York state. After remarks from electeds and activists, NY State Senator Kristen Gonzalez will deliver the 225,000 letters penned by fellow New Yorkers demanding NYU Langone comply with state law and resume providing lifesaving healthcare to trans patients 18 and under.
WHO: NY State Assembly Member and Mayoral Candidate Zohran Mamdani, NY State Senators Jabari Brisport and Kristen Gonzalez, Qween Jean, Cynthia Nixon, and NYC Council Member Alexa Avilés will all be in attendance. Additional speakers include Trans Rights and Bodily Autonomy Working Group leadership as well as an affected patient and CIR doctor. The rally is led by the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (NYC-DSA) in coalition with Jews for Racial & Economic Justice, Black Trans Liberation Kitchen, and NYC Youth 4 Trans Rights.
WHERE: Madison Square Park, 11 Madison Avenue, New York, NY 10010
WHEN: Monday, March 31, 6:30pm
WHY: “While Republican mega-donors may think they call the shots, the taxpayers of New York City are the biggest donors to NYU Langone—including $219 million a year in property tax exemptions alone,” said Mamdani. “That means that when we demand hospitals ensure that every New Yorker, regardless of gender identity, gets the care they need at every New York hospital, we won’t stop until they listen.”
“On this International Trans Day of Visibility, we will not stand idly by as the rights of our trans neighbors are eroded,” said Brisport. “Together, we will fight to ensure that every trans kid in New York has access to the healthcare and support they deserve.”
“The denial of gender-affirming care to our youth is a blatant violation of their rights and well-being,” said Gonzalez. “We renew our call to NYU Langone to confirm their commitment to providing gender-affirming care to all patients who seek it, whether they be youth or adults, whether existing or new—in compliance with state law.”
“Denying healthcare is not only in violation of state law, it’s corporate cowardice that puts the health of New Yorkers at risk,” said Avilés. “NYU Langone must make it clear that they will deliver healthcare to all, and not fold to the Trump-Musk administration’s discriminatory agenda.”
