MEDIA ADVISORY: Local Electeds and Advocates to Rally at Federal Plaza Demanding that State Legislature Stop Allowing ICE to Terrorize New Yorkers
New York, NY — New York City Democratic Socialists of America (NYC-DSA), and Make The Road NY, New York Communities for Change, Jews for Racial and Economic Justice (JFREJ), Student Workers of Columbia, local electeds, and others will gather at Federal Building Plaza (GPS: 1 Federal Plaza, New York, NY 10278) today Friday, April 18, 2025 at 11:00 am to call on the New York State Legislature to free unjustly detained New Yorkers, pass NY for All and Dignity Not Detention, and ensure the protection of first amendment rights for all New Yorkers. From students detained for protesting to end the genocide in Palestine to teenagers swept up in ICE raids, no New Yorker should live in terror of being kidnapped by ICE.
ICE can no longer be allowed to terrorize New Yorkers with impunity. Pass New York for All and Dignity Not Detention, two bills that would end New York State’s shameful collaboration with ICE and get New York out of the business of immigrant detention. The press conference comes in the wake of unjust detentions of immigrants in New York and throughout the country, and the escalated targeting of student protestors, including the abductions of Palestinian Columbia Students Mahmoud Khalil and Mohsen Mahdawi, and the disappearances of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia and Merwil Gutiérrez, a teenager.
Speakers will call on Governor Hochul and the Legislature to stop dragging out the budget process to fit unpopular items like a mask ban, and lead the nation in defending the basic First Amendment rights of her constituents by prioritizing critical legislation that ends New York’s collaboration with ICE and defends the rights of immigrants, students, and all New Yorkers.
WHAT: Local electeds and advocates demand that the New York State Legislature stop allowing ICE to terrorize New Yorkers.
