HAPPENING NOW: New Yorkers Occupying Governor Hochul’s Manhattan Office to Call for Taxes on the Rich
Dozens of elected officials and New Yorkers impacted by cuts to healthcare, public services will take over the Governor’s Midtown office on Thursday
THURSDAY, 4:30 PM: Dozens of elected officials and activists will occupy New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s Midtown, Manhattan office to protest looming healthcare cuts and call for the Governor to tax the rich. Participants directly impacted by cuts to healthcare, home care, and public services will testify about the human cost of the Governor’s inaction, with banners emblazoned: “Hochul: Our Lives or Your Donors” and “Hochul: Tax the Rich.” Elected officials including State Senators Jabari Brisport and Julia Salazar, and NYC-DSA candidates Illapa Saritupac, Conrad Blackburn, Aber Kawas, and Samantha Kattan will participate.
Over one million New Yorkers are set to lose healthcare due to Trump’s cuts if Governor Hochul fails to deliver a budget that taxes the rich and funds Medicaid and the public Essential Plan. Cuts to SNAP benefits will cause over 300,000 to go hungry. The biggest Medicaid cuts in history will devastate hundreds of thousands of home care workers, older adults, and people with disabilities. And our state’s progress on delivering universal childcare and Mayor Mamdani’s affordability agenda will be hamstrung without taxes on the rich. New Yorkers who are directly impacted will put their bodies on the line to ask Governor Hochul and lawmakers to meet the urgency of the moment and tax the rich.
