SUNDAY, 12 PM: Senator Bernie Sanders to join NYC-DSA, 1199SEIU, NYSNA, PSC-CUNY and Elected Officials at Rally in the Bronx to Tax the Rich

The Vermont Senator will headline the Bronx event to call for increased taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations in New York State’s budget.

The rally will be MC’d by filmmaker and comedian Julio Torres with musical guests Cleo Reed and Allegra Krieger.

NEW YORK, NY — On Sunday, March 29 at noon at Lehman College in the Bronx, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) will rally with NYC-DSA, labor unions, and advocates to call on Governor Hochul and New York lawmakers to tax the rich in New York’s state budget, due April 1. Additional speakers include New York State Nurses Association President Nancy Hagans, PSC-CUNY President James Davis, 1199SEIU leader Avia Agababa, State Senator Gustavo Rivera, State Senator Kristen Gonzalez, and Assemblymember Diana Moreno. Gonzalez and Moreno have co-sponsored legislation to raise taxes on wealthy corporations in New York City.

The rally will be MC’d by filmmaker and comedian Julio Torres and feature musical guests Cleo Reed, Allegra Krieger, and DJ Saphe.

Senator Sanders’ participation highlights how New York’s budget fight has become a litmus test for how Democratic leaders across the country respond to Trump’s economic agenda.

New data from Oxfam America released Thursday highlights how the ultrawealthy have prospered in New York in the past year, including:

  • The wealth of the 10 richest New York billionaires — 9 of whom live in New York City — increased by $42.4 billion between March 2025 and March 2026, according to Forbes data.
  • The 10 richest New York billionaires made an average of $4.2 billion each over that 12-month period, equivalent to a wage of $2 million an hour. It would take 82,863 years for the typical New York worker to make that much.
  • The collective net worth of the 10 wealthiest New Yorkers now stands at $421.6 billion, equivalent to 18.2% of the state’s gross domestic product.

The New York State budget is due April 1.
