STATEMENT: Socialist Council Members Vote NO on Eric Adams’ Austerity Budget

CMs Tiffany Cabán, Alexa Avilés, and Shahana Hanif plan to vote “NO” on the Mayor’s FY25 budget

NEW YORK, N.Y. — Today, three Socialist New York City Council Members will vote “NO” on Mayor Eric Adams’ dangerous and shortsighted FY25 budget: Tiffany Cabán, Alexa Avilés, and Shahana Hanif. We applaud these council members for standing with the thousands of working class New Yorkers who have tirelessly organized for months to impact a budget process that is designed to exclude us. The members of NYC-DSA, alongside The People’s Plan coalition, spent months mobilizing our neighbors in pursuit of budget justice. Together, we collected thousands of signatures supporting our demands, organized town halls, and contacted elected officials directly through hundreds of calls and emails urging them to stand against the mayor’s devastating budget cuts and to invest in the city services New Yorkers truly need to thrive. We also worked in coalition to host community events outside our shuttered libraries, such as The People’s Library, which took place days before the eleventh hour restoration of library funding. The unyielding pressure from working-class New Yorkers made a difference in this year’s budget, but the final product is far from what the people of this city deserve.

Despite our city’s nearly $4 billion surplus, the FY25 budget is a patchwork of partial restorations paired with hundreds of millions in new and returning cuts to vital city agencies and services including parks, early childhood education, and CUNY. And while other city agencies suffer their eighth round of cuts, Mayor Adams is leaving the NYPD’s more than $11 billion annual budget completely untouched. He’s also pushed through $225 million for a massive law enforcement training facility in Queens that will transform staff at 15 different city agencies into new arms of the NYPD. Nevertheless, NYC-DSA is committed to fighting against the construction of Cop City NYC and the unprecedented levels of surveillance and criminalization that it will bring, especially for low-income Black and brown folks.

We will also continue to fight for working people at the ballot box. In 2025, it will be Mayor Adams’ vision for NYC that’s on the ballot: one where affordable childcare, CUNY, rent-stabilized housing, parks, and everything else working people need to survive is sacrificed in favor of endless funds for police and prisons. After years of austerity, New Yorkers finally have the chance to remove Eric Adams from City Hall and vote for a fully-funded future for New York City instead. The people of this city need a new Mayor — one who understands that our city must be a home for the working-class, not a playground for the rich.
