Statement: NYC-DSA Stands Against Fascism
New York City Democratic Socialists of America (NYC-DSA) stands in opposition to the growing fascist movement in the United States and to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.
New York, NY — The Democratic Party, by backing a genocide in Palestine and failing to inspire working-class people with a transformative agenda, risks handing a winnable election to Donald Trump for the second time and empowering a growing racist, authoritarian, right-wing movement. Moving beyond the limitations of the two-party system and advancing the interests of working-class people will require sustained organizing that extends far beyond a single election.
We know a second Trump presidency would be catastrophic for the domestic and international working class. Under a Trump-led Republican trifecta, the federal government will be positioned to push for sweeping, tyrannical policies: banning abortion nationwide, building mass deportation camps to expel millions of undocumented immigrants, forcibly detransitioning trans people, purging the federal government of civil servants unwilling to bend or break the law, and invoking the Insurrection Act to deploy military force against Democratic-leaning cities and states.
The Trump administration would be positioned to pass a national right-to-work law. Its NLRB would be disastrous for unions, and would repress the resurgence in worker-led labor organizing across the entire economy. It intends to increase inequality by lowering taxes on billionaires and corporations, and “take a blowtorch to the regulatory state”—allowing unfettered corporate control of our economy and political system. A Trump White House would escalate US support for the genocide in Palestine, aligning with Trump’s call to “finish the job”; it would take an increasingly aggressive economic and military stance towards China and Cuba; throttle relations with mass working-class parties in Latin America; renew support for the global far-right; and much more.
The past year has seen increased repression of left-wing groups and individuals, a trend that will intensify under a Trump presidency and pose serious new challenges for NYC-DSA and other organizations fighting for social and economic justice. If we can block this growing fascist movement from all levels of power, the working class, the left, the labor movement, and DSA will be significantly better positioned to organize for socialism and a truly multiracial democracy.
There are also key fights down the ballot. The importance of voting on New York’s six ballot measures this election cannot be overstated. Passing Proposition 1 will protect reproductive rights and enshrine non-discrimination protections in the state constitution. Blocking Propositions 2–6 will combat the corruption of the Adams administration, protect street vendors, ensure funding of our social services, and regulate the NYPD. In New York, like many other localities across the country, it is vital to support our socialist candidates—we have nine socialist legislators to support including our newest State Assembly candidate Claire Valdez.
We stand in opposition to the growing fascist movement in the US and to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. We will build the left and fight the right by phone-banking, door-knocking, and fundraising to support ballot measure fights and down-ballot DSA campaigns, especially in swing states, and by promoting our socialist program for the United States: Workers Deserve More.
