STATEMENT: NYC-DSA Demands a Permanent Ceasefire in Palestine

Biden’s plan for a temporary ceasefire deal and to send US military to set up an aid port in Gaza will fail to achieve peace and freedom for Palestine

NEW YORK, N.Y. — Today, in response to months of tireless organizing from thousands of Americans, President Biden announced that the U.S. will push for a six-week ceasefire in Gaza and plans to send U.S. military personnel to set up a temporary port in Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid. But we want to be clear: Only a permanent ceasefire and an end to the siege on Gaza will alleviate the humanitarian catastrophe that Palestinians in Gaza are suffering, and move toward peace, freedom, and safety for all in the region.

The president says a temporary ceasefire will allow for a surge in humanitarian aid to Palestinians inside of the Gaza strip, where 2.2 million are currently at “imminent risk of famine.” But no amount of humanitarian aid will make up for the Biden administration approving over 100 arm sales to Israel in the past five months. President Biden cannot pretend to care about Palestinian life while simultaneously funding their death and suffering. We reject temporary pauses in response to an ongoing humanitarian catastrophe never before seen in our lifetimes. We will accept nothing less than a lasting, permanent ceasefire, an end to the siege on Gaza, an exchange of all Palestinian prisoners – thousands of whom are held without charge or trial – for all remaining Israeli hostages, and an end to the occupation and cruel apartheid system.

Biden’s announcement today is a haphazard response to the majority of U.S. voters who want a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and an end to U.S. complicity in the genocide of Palestinians. Since October, we’ve seen the largest pro-Palestine mobilization in U.S. history, with millions taking to the streets to reject funding for Israel’s military when we can’t afford healthcare, housing, or education here at home. We refuse to continue to contribute our labor to genocide, which is why we have protested across industries, from tech to logistics; pushed our unions to call for a ceasefire; and run thousands of divestment campaigns in workplaces and schools across the country. It is also why we refuse to vote for those who continue to perpetuate war crimes, as evidenced by one hundred thousand people voting uncommitted in the Michigan primary and tens of thousands more expressing their outrage in primaries across the country on Super Tuesday. And it is why we will continue to run and vote for candidates who stand with Palestinians – and campaign against those who take AIPAC funding to perpetuate genocide.

Working-class people across the country, across race and religion, are standing up for what we know to be true: We will not be free until Palestinians are free. A permanent ceasefire is only the first step towards a peace settlement which respects the rights of all those between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean sea, and we’ll continue to demand it.
