Mandate for Mamdani demonstrates mass support for the affordability agenda, end of business as usual in New York City.

NEW YORK, NY, NOVEMBER 4, 2025 — Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani has won a resounding victory at the polls over disgraced former Governor Andrew Cuomo with over one million votes. Mamdani’s victory was powered by an unprecedented volunteer effort led by the New York City Democratic Socialists of America, which is now the political home to over 11,000 members of all ages and backgrounds. Powered by NYC-DSA’s volunteer army, Mamdani’s campaign knocked on over 3 million doors to assemble a historic interracial, intergenerational coalition and win a decisive mandate for Mamdani’s affordability agenda.
Zohran Mamdani has won the race for Mayor in the highest-turnout NYC mayoral election in over half a century. Despite a hotly contested race fueled by unprecedented corporate spending from billionaires like Bill Ackman and interventions by Donald Trump and Elon Musk, this victory proves that democratic socialist politics can inspire masses of workers, and win. Mamdani’s relentless focus on affordability, optimistic vision for our city, and proud opposition to Trump’s fascist movement formed the keystone of this historic victory.
“Our movement is at the heart of Zohran’s campaign. This overwhelming victory is a clear mandate for a democratic socialist agenda to make New York City one that people can afford,” said Gustavo Gordillo, NYC-DSA Co-Chair. “Throughout the campaign, Zohran has said that NYC-DSA is his political home. We’re proud of the NYC-DSA members who helped power his campaign, from developing an optimistic, pro-working class agenda to building a historic field operation that boasted over 100,000 unique volunteers by the time polls closed on Election Night. MAGA billionaires spent millions to prop up Andrew Cuomo and try to stop this movement, but we’ve proved once again: they have money, but we have power,” he said.
Cuomo’s campaign relied on saturating the airwaves with malicious advertising, smearing Mamdani with racist and Islamophobic tropes while echoing the rhetoric of the far-right politicians whose support he courted.
“New York has become a playground for the rich, where everyday people are priced out of the city we built,” said NYC-DSA co-chair Grace Mausser. “This affordability crisis is in overdrive as the real estate industry, banks, corporations, and their allies in the corrupt political establishment put profits over people. We are now in a position to reclaim our dignity as working people by building an economy that works for the working class.”
“The work isn’t over,” Mausser continued, commenting on what’s next for NYC-DSA. “Passing the affordability agenda won’t happen overnight. We’re already preparing to do what must be done to organize our neighbors and deliver the affordable New York City that voters have demanded with such resounding force.”
